Performance

Why is it needed?

Performance Engineering involves making predictions using theoretical models and validating these predictions using real data from tests.

Performance Engineers also provide in-service support for the air-framers, using root cause analysis and investigations to make owning an engine as inexpensive – and satisfying – as possible.

What makes it Special?

  • A development engine can have thousands of sensors on it – instantaneously reporting how the engine is performing ton engineers
  • One percent saving in SFC (fuel consumption) is worth $150,000 per year on a 4-engined aircraft.

Service

Why is it needed?

Service provides the technical interface with airline operators and overhaul shops.

The engineers on this team work closely with all other engineering disciplines at a whole and sub-system level to ensure that in-service technical issues are resolved quickly

What makes it Special?

  • Every 2.5 second a Rolls-Royce powered aircraft takes off or lands
  • An engine travels 7 million miles between services – that the equivalent of flying to the moon and back 14 times
  • Rolls-Royce engines fly 12 billion miles each year, creating 30 million service updates
