The turbine is an assembly of discs with blades which extracts energy from the hot gas stream received from the combustor.

In a gas turbine this power is used to drive the compression system, and in a Turbofan (like the Trent 1000) this power is also used to drive the Fan.

• A single blade develops the same horsepower as a Formula 1 racing car
• The gas temperature is at least 400 degrees ABOVE the melting point of the blade’s alloy – that is the equivalent of an ice cube in an oven at gas mark 6.
• The force on the blade root is the same as hanging a London double-decker bus from its tip
